On January 18, Isabelle Ferreras will teach with Auriane Lamine, professor at Louvain Law School (HLS Class of 2014), at the Harvard Trade Union Program on the platform economy and alternatives to uberization. The course will discuss the case of the Belgium-born worker cooperative SMart which intends to find innovative ways to get workers access to the benefits of wage work in a context of extreme flexibility. The case is investigated in the context of a collaborative research agreement with and about SMart by a team or researchers involving Julien Charles, Ferreras, and Lamine since January 2017. The course will review the leadership role that unions can and should pursue in this new context.
